Sleeping in the Time of Corona; Coivid19 Worries Keeping You Up? A Dallas Hypnotist Looks At What’s Going On!

More and more people are developing bad habits and pronounced emotions as they try to do their part in beating the Corona Virus.  Some of the side effects are bursts of anger, intense worry, unhealthy eating, drinking, nail-biting, smoking and sleeping poorly.

I’ve already penned a blog on social distancing from your refrigerator which may help if you are consuming a bit more food these days, you can find it here –  (https://www.familyfirsthypnosis.com/blog/2020/3/25/how-to-social-distance-from-your-refrigerator-stress-eating-in-the-time-of-corona-covid19) and I will address the consumption of alcohol in a future blog, but for today let’s talk about one of the most common problems that we are hearing about, trouble sleeping.

I do have a few quick hypnotic tips to help you get to sleep, and I will share them with you for free, but first let’s get some of the more obvious solutions out the way by checking with some of the other experts out there.

The Sleep Foundation has a page on its website devoted to tips on how to get a good night’s sleep, they range from the advice to exercise daily and go all the way to using bright light to help manage your circadian rhythms. They recommend avoiding alcohol, cigarettes, and heavy meals in the evening, which are unfortunately many of the coping mechanisms many people are using to get through the Covid19 crisis! You’ll find the Sleep Foundations advise here – https://www.sleepfoundation.org/articles/healthy-sleep-tips

A trusted source these days which we are all familiar with is the CDC, the Centers for Disease Control, the recommend “Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smartphones, from the bedroom” and they also suggest that you “Be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time” (https://www.cdc.gov/sleep/about_sleep/sleep_hygiene.html)

Now, for a quick suggestion from the office of your Hypnotist.   First, get comfortable in bed, close your eyes, breathe deeply and regularly for a few moments and send a wave of relaxation from the top of head to the tip of your toes.   Now, gently open your eyes read and say this affirmation (below) to yourself.  It might help to memorize it first then, say the words in the first line a few times.  Next, go to the second line and repeat it a few times.  Keep going line by line.  Notice which line most resonates with your inner feelings.

One of the lines in the affirmation will feel like a better fit than another.  Say the one that feels especially good to you over and over.  After a while move to the next line, if you lose your focus, just go right back to the beginning of the affirmation and start again, as soon as you realize it.

Once you get to the end of the affirmation, simply begin again.  In no time you will likely find you drift off to sleep.  If not, there are probably deeper issues we need to address in one on one sessions.

This affirmation works for four main reasons.  1) Old useless, subconscious guilt is known to keep people awake at night. So speaking right to that hidden guilt, while drifting off to sleep, can work to clear patterns that may have been keeping you up.  You don’t even have to speak to a specific event in your life or any special part of yourself.  Just say the affirmation and feel it’s meaning within you.  2) Affirming that something larger than yourself has control can be very comforting and can soothe you into slumber because you are turning over your life to something greater than yourself. 3) When the mind jumps from thought to thought, that is called thought following and can keep you awake for hours. This process of bringing the mind back to the affirmation each time it moves away interrupts that action.  4) Lastly, realizing that you can not do anything right now and that trying is, for the moment useless, gives you permission to let go and to stop pushing for answers and solutions.  After all, you can always work on what needs to be done in the morning when you are fresh and rested.

Here is the sleep affirmation:

It’s not my fault

I didn’t do anything wrong

I’m not guilty of anything

Trying and pushing are folly right now

You are the source of everything

I surrender to your grace

I trust you

BY THE WAY,  if any of the statements make you feel bad, just skip that one.  If you can come up with a sentiment that works better or if it feels good to say any of the statements in another way, do not hesitate to do so.

Sweet Dreams!
